Key points
- A 1X2 bet on a cup tie is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
- To Qualify and tournament winner markets include extra time and the penalty shootout.
- At 22Bet a match labelled “extra time” is settled without the shootout, which has its own markets.
Your team lifts the cup after penalties and the slip still shows a loss. The bet was on the match, and the match ended level after 90 minutes. Cup ties are where football bets most need a second look at the market name.
Does extra time count in a 1X2 bet?
Extra time does not count in a 1X2 bet at 22Bet, Melbet, BetFury or bet365. Both 22Bet and Melbet take football bets on regular time, which they define as two halves of 45 minutes plus injury time. BetFury says match markets leave out overtime unless the market name states it. At bet365 the result markets rest on 90 minutes and exclude extra time and shootouts.
Worked example
Cup tie: 1-1 after 90 minutes, 2-2 after extra time, Team A win 5-4 on penalties
- Team A to win (1X2)
- Loses: the match was level at 90 minutes
- Draw (1X2)
- Wins
- Over 2.5 goals
- Loses: two goals in regular time
- Correct score 2-2
- Loses: the regular-time score was 1-1
- Team A to qualify
- Wins
₦2,000 on Team A at 2.10 would have returned ₦4,200 on a win in 90 minutes. Here it is lost, while the same stake on Team A to qualify is paid.
Which bets include extra time and penalties?
The bets that include extra time and penalties are the ones about who goes through. Both 22Bet and Melbet name To Qualify, league promotion or relegation and tournament winner, and add “and similar”. BetFury says progression markets take in every stage needed to find the team that advances.
A few match markets carry extra time by name. BetFury marks them, for instance Winner (incl. overtime). An extra bet called Team Wins at 22Bet is settled on the final result with extra time and penalties. Its tournament top goalscorer market counts extra-time goals and leaves out shootout kicks.
Player markets depend on the bookmaker. At bet365, first scorer, last scorer and player shots include extra time. At 22Bet the anytime scorer bet counts goals in regular time. BetFury counts regular time unless the market says overtime is included.
Does stoppage time count in a 90-minute bet?
Stoppage time counts in a 90-minute bet, because it belongs to the half it is added to. A goal at 90+6 is a regular-time goal at each of these bookmakers. A goal in the 96th minute of a tie that has gone to extra time is not.
BetFury states the rule in full: the minutes the referee adds are part of that half. The result rule at bet365 reads the same way, with added injury or stoppage time inside the 90 minutes. A score app that prints 90+6 and 96 side by side is showing two periods.
Timed markets are stricter. Some live interval bets at 22Bet are settled without stoppage time, so a bet on minutes 85:00 to 89:59 ends before the added minutes start. Check the interval on the slip against the clock, and ignore the scoreboard graphic.
How are extra-time and shootout bets settled?
Extra-time bets are settled on that period alone. At bet365 the extra-time in-play markets use the statistics of extra time, and goals, corners and cards from the 90 minutes do not carry over. A tie that reaches extra time at 1-1 starts again from 0-0 for those bets.
A match labelled “extra time” at 22Bet is settled without the penalty shootout, and shootout bets are taken as their own markets. A bet on a team to win the shootout loses if no shootout takes place. So keep three scores apart on a cup night: 90 minutes, extra time alone, and the kicks.
An over/under line and a GG or NG bet both stop at the end of regular time. The own goals explainer covers which scorer bets run into extra time. For a bookmaker comparison, see the football betting sites list or the Betbook Table of betting sites in Nigeria.
