Quick answer

What is live betting?

Live betting, or in-play betting, means placing bets after the match has started, at odds that change with the score and the clock. Markets suspend at goals, penalties and red cards, and a bet is accepted only after a short delay. Live streaming and cash out make a bet easier to follow and to get out of; a fast mobile site counts just as much.

What matters

What matters when you bet in-play

Live odds move fast. These are the things worth checking first.

  • Live streaming

Watching the match you bet on helps you judge it. A table in the guide names the sportsbooks that state streaming, and each sets its own condition for watching.

  • Cash out

Cash out settles a bet before the end at the bookmaker’s price. The offer always includes a margin, so it is never quite the fair price.

  • Bet delay

An in-play bet is held for a few seconds before it is accepted, and it can be refused or re-priced if the odds move in that time.

  • Phone, data and network

Live prices are only as good as your connection. Try the mobile site on your own network before you stake on it; the mobile score sits on each row.

How in-play betting works

In-play betting opens when the match kicks off, and the bookmaker reprices every market as the game goes on. The favourite’s odds drift if it falls behind, and the over 2.5 price shortens after an early goal. Next-goal and corner markets come and go. What you see is the live odds at that second, not a price that will wait for you. Football is the obvious in-play sport; basketball and tennis, where the odds move on almost every point, are the other two that punters bet live.

Bet delay and suspended markets

When you confirm a live bet, the site holds it for a few seconds before it accepts it. If a goal goes in or the odds move during that delay, the bet is refused or offered again at the new price. At goals, penalties, red cards and VAR checks the market shows as suspended and takes no bets at all. The delay protects the bookmaker from punters who see the action before the odds change, and you cannot switch it off.

The picture is behind the pitch

A stream or a TV broadcast runs several seconds behind the stadium, and a stream on mobile data can lag further. The bookmaker’s odds follow the pitch, not your screen, so do not expect to beat a price because of something you have just seen.

The table of Nigeria betting sites sets the markets score beside each site’s odds, payouts and bonus scores.

Live streaming and cash out

Live streaming shows the match inside the app or site. Each bookmaker sets its own condition for watching, and the matches on offer depend on the rights it holds. These sportsbooks state live streaming.

Cash out lets you settle a bet before the final whistle. You take a smaller win while your team leads, or take back part of a stake when the bet is going wrong. The cash out price has the bookmaker’s margin built in. The button disappears while a market is suspended, so it is missing at the very moment you are most likely to want it. These sportsbooks state cash out.

Data use and network

Live odds and a bet slip use little data. A stream uses a great deal, and an afternoon of Premier League football can finish a small bundle. If your network drops while a bet is being placed, check the open bets in your account before you try again, so that you do not stake twice. The betting apps list compares the Android and iPhone apps of these sportsbooks.

Staying in control in-play

In-play betting is the fastest way to bet, which makes it the easiest way to lose track. A market settles in minutes, another opens, and chasing the last bet with the next one is always one tap away.

  • Set your stake and your budget for the match before kick-off.
  • Do not raise the stake to win back a bet that has just lost.
  • Take a break at half-time and look at what you have spent.

No in-play method beats the bookmaker’s margin, and nobody selling live tips can see the future. Live betting is closed to anyone under 18.

When the live match changes

Two things can change a live bet after it is placed: the match is postponed or abandoned, or VAR overturns a goal. The bookmaker’s rules for that market decide what stands, so read them before a big game.

FAQ

In-play betting: rejected bets, cash out and data

Rejected and suspended live bets, cash out, streaming and data use, in brief.

Which live betting sites have live streaming?

The sportsbooks in the first table under ‘Live streaming and cash out’: streaming is on their own feature lists. What you can watch on a given night depends on the rights each bookmaker holds.

Why was my live bet rejected?

Because the odds changed or the market was suspended during the few seconds in which the bookmaker holds an in-play bet. The site then offers the new odds or cancels the bet. It happens most around goals, penalties and red cards.

What does bet suspended mean?

The bookmaker has stopped taking bets on that market for a moment, usually because of a goal, a penalty, a red card or a VAR check. The market reopens with new odds, and cash out is not available while it is suspended.

What is cash out?

Cash out lets you settle a bet before the event ends, at a price the bookmaker offers at that moment. The price includes the bookmaker’s margin, so it is lower than the bet’s fair value.

How much data does live betting use?

Live odds and placing bets use little data. Live streaming uses far more, so watch a match on Wi-Fi or a larger bundle and close the stream when you only need the score.

Are casino sites included?

No. A casino with no sportsbook has no in-play betting markets, so it is left out of the live betting list.

18 and over only

In-play betting is for over-18s. Prices move in seconds, so set the stake before kick-off and do not raise it to win back a lost bet. Responsible gambling: tools and support

How the live betting list is put together

Live streaming and cash out are named for the sportsbooks whose own pages state them. Betbook is paid commission by listed betting sites; that affects coverage and can affect the order of the sportsbooks. The markets and mobile scores are Betbook’s editorial view of market depth, in-play coverage and the site on a phone.

The short version

Live betting moves quickly

In-play betting differs from site to site in markets, streaming and cash out, and it always moves faster than you think. Decide your stake before kick-off, check the site on your own phone, and bet only what you can afford to lose.
