Own goals in goalscorer bets: when a goal does not pay

Own goals do not count for an anytime goalscorer bet at 22Bet, Melbet, BetFury or bet365. At 22Bet the rule on a player to score says the named player has to appear on the pitch and score, and an own goal does not count. The same line covers its brace and hat-trick markets.

BetFury lists the markets by name: anytime goalscorer, player to score a set number and next goalscorer all ignore them. The first, last and anytime scorer rules at bet365 say the same. A bet on the defender to score loses even with his name on the scoresheet.

One market points the other way. The market list at 22Bet has First Goal To Be An Own Goal, and a how-the-goal-is-scored market with Own Goal as a selection.

After an own goal, first goalscorer goes to the next player who scores a goal of his own. BetFury says own goals stay out of the numbering of goals, so the market stays open until an eligible goal comes. At 22Bet the first-goal rule for a named player leaves the own goal out in the same way.

One combined market at 22Bet covers the first scorer and the final score. If the first goal is an own goal, bets there on the player who put it in are settled at odds of 1.

An own goal counts for the team in result and score markets. In 22Bet’s team market on who scores first, an own goal belongs to the side whose score it was added to. Match result, correct score and match totals follow the scoreboard.

One line in 22Bet’s market rules needs a careful read. It says no own goal counts in an individual total, its name for a player total and a team total. Taken as written, Team A’s individual total in the 2-0 example is one goal. Ask 22Bet which way it settles before you back a team total in a match you expect to be scrappy.

Tournament markets follow the player rule. At 22Bet the top goalscorer market counts goals in extra time and leaves out own goals and penalty shootouts.

If your scorer comes on as a substitute, 22Bet and Melbet refund a pre-match bet on him. Both let the bet stand only for players in the starting 11 and settle the rest at odds of 1. Scorer bets on players who do not start are void at bet365 too.

BetFury goes the other way in its Anytime Goalscorer market. A substitute who comes on and scores is a winner, and the bet is void only if he never plays. Its Player Goals market, the one with 1+ and 2+ lines, is for starters.

Live bets are another case. A live scorer bet at 22Bet is settled on what the player does once he is on the pitch. Its anytime market counts goals in regular time, while bet365 includes extra time for first and last scorer. Check the team sheet before you place goalscorer bets.

The scorer can be changed after the match by the competition, and a settled bet at bet365 stays as it was. Its first and last scorer rules say later enquiries by official bodies are not considered. The rules at 22Bet reserve the right to settle on the television broadcast when an official website shows another result. BetFury settles scorer markets on the broadcast and published statistics unless there is clear evidence they are wrong.

Opta, which Betfair settles on, applies its own rules to a disputed goal and lines up with the competition where that applies. Betfair settles its statistics markets on that record.
