GG and NG in betting: what both teams to score means

GG and NG are the two sides of one market: will both teams score or not? It is settled by the scoreline alone, which makes it simple to read and easy to misjudge.

GG NG betting meaning

Key points

  • GG, or Goal Goal, wins when both teams score at least once. NG, or No Goal, wins when at least one team fails to score.
  • The result of the match plays no part: 1-1, 2-1 and 3-2 are all GG; 0-0, 1-0 and 3-0 are all NG.
  • Only the 90 minutes and stoppage time count, unless the market says otherwise.
  • In an acca, GG is a leg like any other: its margin and its risk multiply with the rest.

GG and NG are how Nigerian bet slips label the both teams to score market. GG stands for Goal Goal: each side scores at least one. NG stands for No Goal: one side, or both, finishes without scoring. International sites write the same bet as BTTS Yes and BTTS No. The market has two outcomes and no draw, and either side can lose.

Which scorelines win GG and which win NG

The scorelines that win GG all show a goal for each team, and every other score wins NG.

Who wins the match is irrelevant. A 4-1 home win and a 1-1 draw both pay GG; a 5-0 thrashing pays NG however many goals it had. An own goal counts for the team it is awarded to, so a side can ‘score’ for GG without one of its own players finding the net. Goalscorer bets treat own goals another way.

What counts in 90 minutes, extra time and abandoned games

What counts for GG/NG is regular time: the 90 minutes plus stoppage time, unless the market name says otherwise. Goals in extra time and penalty shoot-outs of a cup tie are left out. 22Bet’s football rules say the same: bets are accepted on regular time, and extra time counts only for markets such as to qualify.

An abandoned match is settled by the site’s own rules. At 22Bet a football match has to reach 80 minutes for bets to stand. Its rules make one exception, for markets already decided when play stopped: a game abandoned at 1-1 has already landed GG.

Bookmakers also offer the market for one half only, as GG first half or GG second half. Other versions ask for more, such as both teams to score two or more. Each is a separate market with its own odds; check the label on the bet slip before you confirm.

How GG and NG are priced

GG and NG are priced against each other: when one shortens, the other lengthens. Take a match between two attacking sides, with GG the favourite at 1.70 and NG at 2.05. Together the two prices contain the bookmaker’s margin.

Worked example

The margin on a GG/NG market

GG at 1.70
100 ÷ 1.70 = 58.8%
NG at 2.05
100 ÷ 2.05 = 48.8%
Total
58.8% + 48.8% = 107.6%
Margin
7.6%

The two chances add up to more than 100%, and the extra 7.6% is the bookmaker’s margin. At 1.70, GG has to land more than 58.8% of the time for the bet to break even. The prices are an illustration.

GG, over 2.5 and the combined bet

GG and over 2.5 goals overlap, and punters mix them up. A 1-1 draw is GG and under 2.5, and a 3-0 win is over 2.5 and NG. Over 2.5 asks only for three goals in the match, whoever scores them.

The combined market, GG and over 2.5, needs both to happen, so it pays more and lands less often than either on its own.

Common mistakes with GG

  • Treating GG as a safe leg. A match between two strong attacks still ends 1-0 or 2-0 on many days.
  • Adding GG to every leg of a long acca. Six GG legs at 1.70 multiply to odds of about 24, a chance of roughly 4% by the bookmaker’s own prices. The accumulator guide has the sum.
  • Forgetting the 90-minute rule in cup ties that go to extra time.
  • Taking a booking code full of GG picks on trust. A code saves selections and leaves their chances where they were.

Look for GG/NG, or both teams to score, among the goal markets of a match; the price for the same game differs from one sportsbook to the next. The football betting list compares the sportsbooks, and the table of Nigeria betting sites gives each one’s score for odds and market range. Bet what you can afford to lose, and only if you are 18 or over.

0-0, extra time and other GG/NG questions

What does GG mean in betting?

GG means Goal Goal: both teams score at least one goal in the match. The bet wins on scorelines such as 1-1, 2-1 or 3-2 and loses if either team finishes on zero.

What does NG mean in betting?

NG means No Goal: at least one of the two teams does not score. It wins on 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 and any other result where one side stays on zero.

Is 0-0 GG or NG?

NG. Neither team has scored, so GG loses and NG wins.

Does extra time count for GG?

No, unless the market states that extra time is included. GG/NG is settled on the 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

Is GG the same as over 1.5?

No. A 2-0 win is over 1.5 but NG, because only one team scored. GG needs a goal from each side; over 1.5 only needs two goals in total.
