Key points
- Over 2.5 wins with three or more goals in the match; under 2.5 wins with two or fewer.
- The .5 means there is no tie: a match cannot finish on two and a half goals, so one side of the bet always wins.
- The lower the line, the likelier the over and the shorter its odds: over 0.5 pays little, over 3.5 pays well.
- Only goals in the 90 minutes and stoppage time count, unless the market says otherwise.
Over/under betting, also called totals, is a bet on how many goals a match produces. The bookmaker sets a line, 2.5 on most football coupons, and you choose over or under. Which team scores, and who wins, plays no part: a 3-0 and a 2-1 are the same result for an over 2.5 bet.
What over 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 mean
Over 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 each name the number of goals the match has to pass.
| Line | Over wins with | Under wins with |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 1 goal or more | 0 goals |
| 1.5 | 2 or more | 0 or 1 |
| 2.5 | 3 or more | 0, 1 or 2 |
| 3.5 | 4 or more | 3 or fewer |
| 4.5 | 5 or more | 4 or fewer |

Count every goal in the match, from both teams. A 2-1 result has three goals, so over 2.5 wins and over 3.5 loses. Own goals count towards the match total. Goals in extra time and penalty shoot-outs are left out, unless the market name says they are included.
Why the line ends in .5
The line ends in .5 because a half goal cannot happen, so every bet has a winner and a loser. Some sites also offer whole-number lines, under the name Asian total. There a third result is possible: on over 2.0, exactly two goals returns your stake, three or more wins and fewer than two loses. 22Bet’s rules word it this way: when the result equals the total quoted, over and under are settled at odds of 1.
Two more versions change the settlement. Quarter lines such as 2.25 split the stake between the two nearest lines. A three-way total, marked 3way at 22Bet, adds an ‘exactly’ selection and refunds nothing on the exact number. If the number on your slip does not end in .5, read the market rules before you confirm.
How the lines are priced
The lines are priced around the one the bookmaker expects to be closest to an even contest, 2.5 in the example here. Move the line down and the over becomes likelier and cheaper; move it up and the over pays more.
| Line | Over | Under |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 | 1.28 | 3.60 |
| 2.5 | 1.85 | 1.95 |
| 3.5 | 3.10 | 1.36 |
| 4.5 | 6.00 | 1.12 |

The prices are an illustration and show the trade. Over 1.5 lands on most days and pays little, so punters use it to pad an acca. Each such leg still adds its own margin and its own chance of cutting the slip.
Worked example
Six ‘safe’ legs of over 1.5
- Odds per leg
- 1.28
- Six legs
- 1.28 multiplied six times = 4.40
- Chance each leg implies
- 78.1%
- Chance the combined price implies
- 22.7%
Six short prices multiply into a bet the bookmaker’s own odds rate at less than one chance in four.
The accumulator guide shows how the margin in each leg compounds as well.
Team totals, half totals and other sports
Team totals and half totals apply the same line to part of the match. A team total counts the goals of one side only, such as home team over 1.5, and 22Bet’s rules leave own goals out of it. A first-half or second-half total counts the goals in that half, on a lower line such as 0.5 or 1.5. Over/under with 1X2 is a combined market: home win and over 2.5 needs both parts to be right, and GG and over 2.5 works the same way.
Other sports use the same idea with bigger numbers. A total covers points in basketball and games in tennis, with lines such as 215.5 points or 22.5 games.
Over/under in live betting
Over/under in live betting follows the clock. As the minutes pass without a goal, the over drifts and the under shortens. An in-play total states its period on the market: the whole match, the rest of the half or the next ten minutes. One late goal settles the bet either way, and a suspended market takes no new bets. The live betting list compares the sportsbooks for in-play markets.
The same line carries different prices at different bookmakers, so price an over 2.5 at more than one before you bet. The table of betting sites in Nigeria gives each sportsbook’s score for odds and market range, and the football betting list sets the sportsbooks side by side. No line is certain to win. Betting is for adults aged 18 or over.
The over/under questions that come up most
What is over 2.5 in betting?
Three or more goals in the match, counting both teams. Results such as 2-1, 3-0 and 2-2 win; 1-1, 2-0 and 0-0 lose.
What does over 1.5 mean?
Two or more goals in the match. It loses only on 0-0, 1-0 and 0-1, which is why its odds are short.
What does under 2.5 mean?
Two goals or fewer in the match: 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0 all win. A third goal at any point loses the bet.
Is 2-1 over 2.5?
Yes. The match has three goals, which is more than 2.5.
What happens on over 2.0 if there are exactly two goals?
On a whole-number line the stake is returned, because the result is neither over nor under. A 2.5 line has no such middle result.

Goal lines are for bettors aged 18 and over
One late goal settles an over or under either way. Fix the stake before kick-off and leave it alone at half-time.
