Key points
- A USSD deposit is approved by dialling your bank’s short code from the SIM linked to your account; that step needs no data.
- The bookmaker’s cashier creates the payment and shows what to dial, so you still need to reach the site.
- Sessions time out, banks charge for each one and cap daily amounts: have your PIN ready and keep deposits modest.
- Withdrawals do not come back by USSD; they go to a bank account in your own name.
USSD betting means funding a betting account by dialling a code instead of opening a banking app. The payment travels over the same channel as a balance check or an airtime top-up, which is why it works with no data bundle and on a phone with buttons. It is a deposit method, not a way of betting without the internet, and the difference matters.
How bank USSD works without data
USSD is a live session between your SIM and your bank, carried over the voice network. You dial a short code, the bank answers with a menu, you reply with numbers, and you confirm with a PIN you set up beforehand. Nothing is downloaded and no bundle is used. The bank recognises you by the phone number registered on your account, so the code has to be dialled from that SIM.
In one sentenceA USSD code is the short number, starting with * and ending with #, that opens your bank’s menu on any phone.
Every bank has its own. GTBank’s is *737#, First Bank’s *894# and Access Bank’s *901#, to give three well-known ones. They are quoted here to show what a bank code looks like; which banks a bookmaker supports is listed in its cashier.
Paying a bookmaker with the code, step by step
Open the cashier
Log in to the bookmaker, open the deposit page and choose USSD. This step needs a connection: a little data, Wi-Fi or a second device.
Pick your bank and amount
Select your bank from the ones the site supports and enter the amount.
Note the string to dial
The site shows a code that begins with your bank’s USSD code and carries the amount and a reference. Copy it exactly.
Dial from your bank SIM
Use the line registered with your bank account, follow the prompt and confirm with your USSD PIN.
Wait for both messages
Your bank sends a debit alert and the bookmaker credits the balance, normally within a minute or two.
Session timeouts, charges and limits
A USSD session closes by itself after a short while. If you stop to look for your PIN, the menu disappears and the payment is abandoned; start again from the cashier, because the reference in the old string may no longer be valid.
Each session is charged according to your bank’s tariff, whether or not the payment succeeds, so three failed attempts cost three charges. Banks also cap what you can send by USSD in one transaction and in one day, and the cap depends on how your account and your USSD profile are set up.
Worked example
A deposit above the USSD limit
- Deposit you want to make
- ₦50,000
- Your bank’s USSD limit per transaction
- ₦20,000
- USSD payments needed
- 3 (₦20,000 + ₦20,000 + ₦10,000)
- Session charges
- 3, at your bank’s tariff
For an amount like this, a bank transfer is one step and one charge. The figures are an illustration; your bank sets your limit.
When the code does not work
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The menu closes before you finish | Session timeout | Start again from the cashier with your PIN ready |
| A connection problem or an invalid code message | The USSD service is down, or the string was mistyped | Check the string, then try again later |
| Your bank does not recognise you | The SIM is not the one registered with the account | Dial from the registered line |
| A debit alert, but no credit at the bookmaker | The payment is pending or has failed | Wait: a failed payment is normally reversed. After a day, send the reference to the bookmaker and to your bank |

When USSD is the wrong choice
- Large deposits: daily caps and a charge for every session make a bank transfer simpler.
- When you have data anyway: a transfer or a wallet payment is as quick and leaves a clearer record in your banking app.
- Withdrawals: there is no USSD route out. Winnings are paid to a bank account in your own name.
- A bookmaker that does not list it: USSD cannot be forced, and the cashier decides.
It is the right choice on the days when calls work and the internet does not, for a modest top-up before a match. The table below shows the bookmakers that accept USSD, the USSD list goes into more detail, and the full table of Nigeria betting sites shows how each of them scores overall.
Keeping USSD safe
Your USSD PIN moves money without any other check, so treat it like your card PIN. Never dial a code that somebody sends you in order to receive a payment or a bonus: a code can authorise a transfer out of your account. If you lose the SIM, ask your bank to block USSD on that number at once. You must be 18 or over to bet, and a deposit that takes thirty seconds still comes out of the same budget.
