Wagering requirements explained: what 5x and 10x really mean

A bonus is a loan with conditions. The wagering requirement is the main one, and working it out in naira takes two minutes.

Betting bonus wagering requirements

Key points

  • A wagering requirement is the total you must bet before bonus money can be withdrawn: the multiple times the amount it applies to.
  • 5x on the bonus and 5x on deposit plus bonus are different offers: the second asks for twice the bets on a 100% match.
  • Minimum odds, the bet types that count and the expiry decide how hard the total is to reach.
  • A maximum cash-out can cap what you keep, whatever you win.

Wagering requirements are the condition that turns a bonus from a number on the screen into money you can withdraw, or fails to. Every welcome offer has one, written as a multiple such as 5x or 10x. The multiple alone tells you little; what it multiplies, and which bets count, tell you the rest.

What 5x and 10x mean

In one sentenceA wagering requirement of 5x means you must place bets worth five times a stated amount before the bonus, and what you won with it, can be withdrawn.

The stated amount is the catch. Some offers apply the multiple to the bonus alone; others apply it to the deposit and the bonus together.

What a first deposit of ₦10,000 with a 100% bonus asks of you

5xBonus (₦10,000)₦50,000
5xDeposit + bonus (₦20,000)₦100,000
10xBonus (₦10,000)₦100,000

Two offers that both say 5x can differ by a factor of two. Find the words that follow the multiple before you compare anything else.

Minimum odds and qualifying bets

Only qualifying bets count towards the total. The terms define them, usually in three ways.

  • Minimum odds: each bet, or each leg, must be at or above a stated price, such as 1.40 or 1.80. Bets on short favourites do not count.
  • Bet type: many sports offers count only accumulators of three or more selections. Every such bet needs several results to go your way.
  • Excluded bets: cashed-out bets, bets on both sides of a market and bets on certain markets are commonly left out.

An acca rule changes the character of the wagering. ₦50,000 in singles at 1.50 is a slow grind; ₦50,000 in three-leg accas is a series of bets that each lose more often than they win.

Expiry: the clock on the bonus

Worked example

The same ₦50,000 over two time limits

Total to bet
₦50,000
With 30 days
₦50,000 ÷ 30 = ₦1,667 a day
With 7 days
₦50,000 ÷ 7 = ₦7,143 a day

A short expiry forces bigger or more frequent bets. Whatever is not wagered by the deadline is removed, usually with the winnings made from it.

Maximum cash-out and other caps

Some bonuses limit what you can withdraw from them: a maximum cash-out of a few times the bonus, or a fixed sum. Win more than the cap and the excess is removed when the wagering is complete. No deposit bonuses and free spins almost always carry one. Other limits to look for are a maximum stake per bet while the bonus is active, and a maximum bonus amount, which is the ‘up to’ in the headline.

What clearing a bonus is likely to cost

Every bet carries the bookmaker’s margin, so betting a large total has an expected cost even before luck comes into it.

Worked example

A rough price for a ₦10,000 bonus

Bonus
₦10,000
Total to bet at 5x the bonus
₦50,000
Assumed average margin on your bets
5%
Expected cost of the wagering
5% of ₦50,000 = ₦2,500
At 10x on deposit plus bonus
5% of ₦200,000 = ₦10,000

On these assumptions the first offer leaves most of the bonus intact and the second costs as much as the bonus is worth. Real results swing widely around the average, and accumulators carry a higher margin than singles.

That is the honest way to read a headline: a large bonus on heavy wagering can be worth less than a small one on light terms, and a bonus is never a reason to deposit more than you planned.

A checklist before you claim

Read these in the terms

  • What the multiple applies to: the bonus, or the deposit plus the bonus
  • The minimum odds, and whether only accumulators count
  • The expiry, in days
  • Any maximum cash-out or maximum stake
  • Whether a promo code or an opt-in is needed
  • What happens to the bonus if you withdraw early

You must be 18 or over, and an open bonus usually blocks a withdrawal until the wagering is done.

Questions and answers

What are wagering requirements in betting?

The total you have to bet before a bonus can be withdrawn, written as a multiple of the bonus or of the deposit plus the bonus.

Is 5x wagering good?

It depends on what it applies to and which bets count. 5x on the bonus with singles allowed is light; 5x on deposit plus bonus in accumulators is much heavier.

Do all my bets count towards wagering?

No. Only qualifying bets do: at or above the minimum odds, of the bet type the terms name, and placed before the expiry.

Can I withdraw my deposit before the wagering is finished?

Usually only by giving up the bonus and any winnings made with it. The terms set out what a withdrawal does to an open bonus.

What is a maximum cash-out?

A cap on how much you can withdraw from bonus winnings. Anything above it is removed when the wagering is complete.
