What matters
How to judge a bookmaker’s odds
Odds differ from site to site on the same match. This is why, and what to look at.
The margin
Every price carries a margin, which is the bookmaker’s share. A lower margin gives more back on every winning bet, all season.
Accas multiply it
On an acca the margin applies to every leg. A little extra per selection adds up quickly across a long bet slip.
Market by market
A bookmaker can be sharp on 1X2 and wide on corners or player markets. Compare the market you actually bet.
Odds against bonuses
A boost or a bonus can outweigh a small difference in price once. The margin applies to every bet you place.
What best odds really means
High odds on their own mean nothing: 15.00 on a correct score is high because the outcome is unlikely. Best odds means the highest price on the same selection. Say one bookmaker offers 2.00 on a team to win and another offers 1.90. A ₦1,000 stake returns ₦2,000 at the first and ₦1,900 at the second, for the same result.
Odds in Nigeria are shown as decimals. The figure is what each ₦1 of stake returns, stake included, so 1.90 pays ₦1,900 on a ₦1,000 stake. Any price under 2.00 means the bookmaker rates the outcome as more likely than not.
The amount by which a market’s implied probabilities add up past 100% is the overround, or margin. It measures the prices on offer; what the bookmaker earns on a given result is another matter.
Odds are one score among several in the table of betting sites in Nigeria.
How to work out the margin and the payout percentage
Divide 1 by each of the odds in a market and add the results. For example, a match priced at 2.50 for the home win, 3.20 for the draw and 3.00 for the away win gives 0.400 + 0.313 + 0.333 = 1.046. The market adds up to 104.6%, so the overround is 4.6%.
The payout percentage of a 104.6% market is about 95.6% (100 ÷ 104.6 × 100). It is a way to compare prices, not a promise that ₦95.60 comes back from each ₦100 staked. What a punter gets back depends on the bets that win.
Two-way markets are quicker to check. At 1.90 on both sides the market adds up to 105.3%; at 1.95 on both sides, 102.6%.
Why accas magnify the difference
An acca multiplies the odds of every leg, so it multiplies the margin too. For example, five legs at 2.00 multiply to 32.00, and a ₦1,000 stake returns ₦32,000 if all five win. At 1.90 a leg, the same five selections multiply to 24.76 and return ₦24,761. The gap on one leg was 5%; on the bet slip it is more than 22%.
That is why an acca boost should be weighed against the odds underneath it. The acca boosts list compares the offers, and the accumulator guide has more worked slips.
Odds comparison in practice
- Compare the market you bet: the margin on GG/NG, over/under or a player market can differ from the one on 1X2.
- Compare at the time you bet. Odds move with team news and with the money staked.
- Look at the same selection at more than one bookmaker before a big acca.
- Treat an odds score as editorial opinion, and check the settlement rules are the same before you call two prices equal.
Good odds reduce what betting costs you; they do not turn it into income. The margin is still there on every bet. Comparing prices is for over-18s, and the stake stays money you can lose. The guide to how betting odds work goes further.
FAQ
Questions about odds and margins
Margins, payout percentages and why a small difference in price grows on an accumulator.
Which betting site has the highest odds in Nigeria?
None holds the highest odds across the board: the top price moves from match to match and from market to market. Compare the same selection, under the same settlement rules, at the moment you bet.
How do I work out the margin on a match?
Add 1 divided by each decimal price for every outcome of the market. Whatever the total is above 100% is the overround, the bookmaker’s margin. It measures the prices, whatever the result turns out to be.
What is a payout percentage?
It is 100 divided by the total of a market’s implied probabilities, as a percentage. A market that adds up to 105% has a payout percentage of about 95.2%. It describes the prices, not what any one punter gets back.
Do high odds mean a better bookmaker?
Only when you compare the same selection. High odds on an unlikely outcome are just a long shot. The better bookmaker for price is the one that offers more than its rivals on the same bet.
Why do odds matter more on accumulators?
Because the margin is applied to every leg and the legs are multiplied together. A small difference per selection becomes a large difference in the payout of a long bet slip.
Are betting sites with the best odds also the best overall?
Not always. Odds are one criterion; payouts, bonus terms, the mobile site and payment methods count too. The Betbook Table shows every score side by side.

The short version
Compare the price before every bet
Betting sites with the best odds keep less of every stake, and it shows most on accas. Check the price on your own bet, and bet only what you can afford to lose.
